OPERATION FIRECRACKER BOOZE IT AND LOSE IT CAMPAIGN IN FULL SWING
July 1, 2026
Hillsborough, NC (July 1, 2026) – Although the administrative offices of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day, Operation Firecracker Booze It and Lose It will target impaired drivers through Sunday, July 5.
Sheriff Charles Blackwood said, “Last year, 464 people died in our state from crashes involving impaired drivers. The 4th of July weekend is one of the most dangerous times because of increased traffic and holiday celebrations. If you do not have a designated driver or another safe ride home, do not consume alcohol or other impairing substances. It is as simple as that.”
Last year, during the annual Governor’s Highway Safety Program initiative, law enforcement officers in North Carolina arrested 917 people for driving while impaired, including 77 people under the legal drinking age. Operation Firecracker features DWI checkpoints, saturation patrols, and zero-tolerance enforcement. Penalties for impaired driving include heavy fines, driver’s license revocation, and possible jail time.
“Please review safety guidance and talk with your family about making wise choices,” said Blackwood. “Whether you’re traveling, boating, swimming, grilling, or setting off fireworks, a little planning can prevent a tragedy. Don’t let a trip to the emergency department spoil your celebration of our nation's 250th birthday.”
