Training

The Training Division ensures compliance with legislative mandates and Sheriff’s Education & Training Standards Commission rules and regulations regarding the on-going training of both deputies and detention officers.

For officers to maintain their certification, a designated number of in-service training hours must be completed each year, and the agency must appropriately maintain all training records. This division directs staff to not only required training, but also to specialized opportunities that will benefit an officer’s career goals.  Additionally, Rick Clayton is a Specialized Firearms Instructor, and is responsible for qualifying all sworn officers on a yearly basis and all new hires.

The Training Division also oversees the Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy, offered through a partnership with Durham Technical Community College.  Responsibilities include selection of instructors, ensuring student compliance with rules and regulations, overseeing the Field Training Program, and development of a post-academy curriculum.
