Patrol Bios

Captain Terrell Tripp started his career in law enforcement in June of 1991 under then Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass.

  Prior to his law enforcement career he was born and raised in southern Orange County graduating from Chapel Hill High school in 1984 he went on to graduate Nashville Auto Diesel College and then worked for several years as a diesel mechanic.

He was raised in a law enforcement family with his Father retiring after serving over 30 years as an officer in Orange County he felt a calling to follow in his father’s footsteps.

After completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy at Burlington Police Department he served 18 Months as a detention Officer at the Orange County Detention Center. He was then promoted to patrol officer. He went on to join the Tactical Team and served as a Sniper for several years. After being promoted to Corporal he served as a Field Training Officer until his promotion to Sergeant of a patrol squad. In 2014 He was promoted to Lieutenant in the patrol division.

Sheriff Charles Blackwood gave Lt. Tripp the opportunity in 2017 to serve as Patrol Captain.​ As Patrol Captain he oversees the Patrol, Civil and the School Resource Officers.

Lt. Kevin Jones grew up in Orange County just outside of Hillsborough and graduated from Orange High School in 1993. He went on to attend Alamance Community College, majoring in Criminal Justice. Lt. Jones worked as a civilian security monitor for the Chapel Hill Police Dept. from 1994 until 1996. He was hired by Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass as a Deputy Sheriff for the Orange County Detention Center on April 8, 1996.

Lt. Jones attended the Burlington Police Department's Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy and the Durham County Sheriff’s Office’s Basic Detention Officer Academy and graduated from both in 1997. He became a Patrol Deputy in June of 1997 and has served as a Deputy Sheriff (and a Chapel Hill Police Officer from 2001 until 2002) until present time.

During his tenure at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Lt. Jones  has received over 1,700 hours of training. In this he has earned his Basic and Advance Law Enforcement Certificate, risen through the ranks from traffic Team Leader to his current position of Lieutenant overseeing  Patrol Squad A and  has earned the rank of Master Operator on the Tactical Team.

David Berry - Began his career with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in 1999. He completed Basic Law Enforcement Training in 2000 and was transferred to the Patrol Division in 2001, where he continues to serve today.

 

Lt. Berry was promoted to Corporal in 2006 and served in that capacity until 2015 when he was promoted to Sergeant. In July of 2016, Lt. Berry was promoted to his current rank of Lieutenant.

 

In addition to his regular duties as a Patrol Deputy, he has served as a Field Training Officer, a member of the Traffic Team, a Senior Member of the Special Response Team, and has been awarded his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate.

 

Lt. Berry received special recognition from the Hillsborough Town Council in 2001 and the Medal of Valor in 2010 for his exemplary service during two critical lifesaving incidents.

Lt. Fearrington - Is from Chapel Hill, NC.  In 1988 he graduated from Chapel Hill High School, and then attended Brevard College where he played basketball and received an education in Sociology.  Prior to working at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office he worked in the computer services industry and automotive customer service.  In February of 1999, he joined the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as a Detention Officer in the Jail.

 

From his beginnings in the Detention Facility, he served in several capacities, ultimately progressing to the rank of Patrol Division Lieutenant in October of 2015.

 

Currently he serves as the Shift Supervisor for C-Squad as well as a Master Operator on the Tactical Team.  Among the parts of his job that he most enjoys is the ability to volunteer at local elementary schools for Read-A-Thons, and Black History Month presentations.

Lieutenant Tina R. Sykes was born and raised in Person County. In 2001, Sykes graduated from North Carolina State University earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a criminal justice concentration.

In 2002, she began her career with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as a detention officer. Shortly after, she was transferred to the main office where she worked in the radio room handling all of the DCI (Division of Criminal Information) transactions.

 

In 2004, she was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division where she worked juvenile and sexual assault cases. While in the Investigative Division, she was promoted to Sergeant of Investigations.  While working as an investigator, she earned her Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and Criminal Investigator Certificate.

 

In 2014, she was promoted to Lieutenant over the School Resource Officer Program.  In 2016, she transferred from Criminal Investigations to concentrate on the School Resource Officer Program. Sykes now serves as the School Liaison for Orange County Schools and supervises the Deputies in the 13 Orange County Schools.

Cpl. Brian Whitehurst - Has been a Law Enforcement Officer since 1996. Deputy Whitehurst joined the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in January of 2016.

 

He currently serves as a Corporal in the Patrol Division and is the Team Leader for the Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit.

 

Deputy Whitehurst also serves as a regional Law Enforcement Liaison with the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program and is a Speed Measurement Instrument Instructor.
