Antonio Cartnail serves as a Sergeant in the Orange County Detention Center.

Sergeant Cartnail is from Hillsborough and graduated from Orange High School. He attended Winston-Salem State University for a few years prior to going into grocery store management. He enjoyed working at both Lowe’s and Food Lion because his positions allowed him to interact with many different people.

Although he never planned a career in law enforcement, he became interested after talking with his brother-in-law who was a deputy at the time. Cartnail found himself attracted to the opportunities within the field, and he liked the mission of the agency.

Hired in 2007 by then-Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass, Cartnail started working in the detention center and found he continued to enjoy working with and learning about all kinds of people. He graduated from Basic Detention Officer School at the Durham County Sheriff’s Office in 2008. He became a corporal in 2010 and he is certified in Crisis Intervention Training.

Promoted to Sergeant in 2014, Cartnail is responsible for his shift. As such, he supervises the corporal on duty and he is responsible for the safety and security of all persons inside the detention facility. He treats the inmates as he would like to be treated and he remains aware that every situation needs a case-by-case approach.
