Tina R. Sykes serves as a Captain with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, overseeing both the School Resource Officer Program and the Training Division.
Captain Sykes was born and raised in Person County. In 2001, Sykes graduated from North Carolina State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a criminal justice concentration.
In 2002, she began her career with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as a detention officer. Shortly after, she was transferred to the main office where she worked in the radio room handling all of the DCI (Division of Criminal Information) transactions. Sykes then served as the school resource officer for Efland Cheeks Elementary School for a year before command staff transferred her to the Criminal Investigation Division in 2004.
In the CID, Sykes worked juvenile and sexual assault cases. She was promoted to Sergeant and earned her Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and Criminal Investigator Certificate. She was promoted again in 2014. As a Lieutenant within the CID, her responsibilities included overseeing the Special Victim’s Unit and managing the School Resource Officer Program.
A restructuring within the agency in 2016 moved the School Resource Officer program off-site to an office in Orange High School. There, Sykes was able to concentrate on the School Resource Officer Program and build relationships with administration at the individual schools and with administration at the District Office. In this role, she served as the primary School Liaison to Orange County Schools and she supervised the 13 school resource officers in the Orange County School System.
Sheriff Blackwood promoted Lt. Sykes to Captain in July 2019 and she moved back to the main office. She retains responsibility for the School Resource Officer Program and now also oversees the Training Division. There, she is the lead administrator for the Basic Law Enforcement Academy, a five month program through which deputies receive their initial certification. She also tracks state mandated in-service training for all sworn personnel (deputies are required to receive 24 in-service training hours per year; detention officers must receive 16). Captain Sykes also arranges and documents any additional training according to employee interests and agency needs.
