Tim Jones serves as the Major of the Detention and Courts Division.
Major Jones grew up in the Buckhorn area of Orange County. After graduation from Orange High School, he enlisted in the Army Reserves before transferring into the National Guard where he served in communications for 13 years, including a tour in Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006-2007.
During his time in the reserves, he worked for a contract company with IBM and then with the Transportation Security Administration as a lead security screener and supervisor at the RDU airport. In 2005, he began his law enforcement career with the Durham City Police where he served until March 2008. He then accepted a position with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy.
After several years on patrol, Tim transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division in 2013. Specializing in crime scene and evidence work, he received promotions to Sergeant and Lieutenant, gradually assuming more responsibility.
Sheriff Blackwood promoted Tim to Captain of the Detention Division in 2020 where he had the responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the detention facility while also serving as the agency liaison to the team constructing a new detention facility located at the Northern Orange Campus. In his role as Major, he will continue planning for the operational transition to the new facility, oversee operations at the existing facility, and also assume responsibility for the security and safety of the courts.
During his career, Major Jones prepared for increased leadership and supervisory roles by receiving the prestigious FBI LEEDA trilogy award, given after the successful completion of the Supervisory Leadership Institute, the Command Leadership Institute, and the Executive Leadership Institute. Tim also successfully completed Part 1 of the inaugural Jail Administrators Institute of Learning, a course of study developed by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association.
Major Jones is the proud father of an Eagle Scout.
