Jeff Ray serves as a lieutenant in the Criminal Investigations Division.
Born in Durham, Ray grew up in the Cedar grove Community north of Hillsborough and graduated from Orange High School in 1995.
Prior to beginning his career at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Ray worked for a decade as a butcher at Kroger. Seeking a change, he applied to the Sheriff’s Office in 2006, attracted by the career path law enforcement provides.
Hired by then-sheriff Lindy Pendergrass, Ray first served in the Detention Center and completed Basic Detention Officer School at the Durham County Sheriff’s Office. In 2009, he attended Basic Law Enforcement Training, also at the DCSO. Initially serving in the Courts and Transport Division, Ray transferred after two years to the Patrol Division in 2011. While serving there, Ray earned a promotion to Corporal. After a year back in Courts and Transport, he returned to Patrol and served there until being promoted to the Criminal Investigation Division in 2016.
The North Carolina Sheriff Police Alliance presented Ray with the Recognition of Excellence award in 2017. Also that year, the NC Auto Dealers Association recognized him as a 2017 North Carolina Hometown Hero for maintaining a case solvability rating of greater than 70%, many times higher than the national average.
Sheriff Blackwood promoted Ray to Sergeant of Investigations in 2019 and then to Lieutenant in April 2020. In this role, he coordinates the day-to-day operations of the division and works with investigators to maximize their ability to solve each assigned case in a positive manner.
