David Berry serves as the Captain of the Patrol Division.


Captain Berry began his career with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in 1999. He completed Basic Law Enforcement Training in 2000 and was transferred to the Patrol Division in 2001. He was promoted to Corporal in 2006 and to Sergeant in 2015. In July of 2016, Berry was promoted to Lieutenant.


In addition to his duties described above, Berry has served as a Field Training Officer, a member of the Traffic Team, a Senior Member of the Special Response Team, and he earned his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate in 2016.


In 2001, the Hillsborough Town Council issued a special proclamation, recognizing then-Lieutenant Berry for his exemplary service during a critical lifesaving incident. Then-Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass awarded Berry the Medal of Valor in 2010 for rescuing a woman from a burning vehicle.


Sheriff Blackwood promoted David Berry to serve as the Captain of Patrol Operations in July 2019. In this role he oversees four squads of approximately 10 deputies each. These officers serve the community twenty-four hours a day, 365 days per year, covering 409 square miles in the county. The Patrol Division is responsible for answering and responding to 911 calls, conducting proactive patrols, serving arrest warrants and other criminal processes, enforcing traffic laws, performing business and residential security checks, and investigating misdemeanor criminal offenses.
