AJ Whitted serves as a Sergeant in the Orange County Detention Center.
Sergeant Whitted grew up in Hillsborough and graduated from Orange High School in 2000. As a young boy and student, he worked at his father’s construction company (Whitted’s Plaster and Stucco). Following graduation, he continued to work there and also at a family cleaning service called First Impressions.
Then-sheriff Lindy Pendergrass hired Whitted in November 2003. He attended Basic Detention Officer Training soon after, graduating from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office Academy in March of 2004. Whitted likes the hours, the stability, and the family atmosphere in the detention center.
Whitted took several leadership classes to improve his skills. Initially promoted to Corporal in July 2008, he became a sergeant in August of 2010. As such, he has responsibility for the safety and security of the facility, the inmates, and his squad when they are on duty. Whitted believes in treating the inmates the way he would like to be treated.
