About the Detention Center
Originally built in 1925, the Detention Center could only house 38 inmates. Since the 1980s, renovations and additions paid for primarily by the US Marshal’s Office increased inmate bed space to 129. The Detention Center houses pre-trial detainees, state sentenced inmates, and temporary Federal prisoners.
The Detention Division is tasked with providing a safe, secure and clean environment for persons committed there. This includes:
-
Frequent visual checks of inmates
-
Processing inmate mail
-
Transportation to and from court
-
Providing access to appropriate medical care*
-
Conducting and monitoring visitation
-
Providing three nutritious meals daily*
Nurses are present at the facility daily in order to dispense medication and provide basic medical needs. Additionally, four cooks diligently prepare over 130,000 hot meals per year, as well as sandwiches and fruit on Saturday and Sunday nights.
